Mac Mini M4 Clusters for Local LLMs
The "row of Mac minis running LLMs" setup is real, and it's a rational configuration for specific workloads — not a meme. This page separates what's documented from what's marketing.
As of 2026-09-04. Shipment and lead-time figures below are Q1–Q2 2026 data; pricing is from the dated sources at the end.
Why the demand spike is real
- Mac shipments grew 9.1% in Q1 2026 (Canalys) and 10.1% in Q2 2026 (IDC), while the broader PC market shrank — Apple silicon's unified memory keeps pulling local-AI workloads that 8–16GB consumer GPUs can't serve.
- Supply is the constraint right now: M4-series delivery delays peaked at 10+ weeks around May 2026 and have stayed stretched for months. If you're planning a cluster in Q3 2026, order lead time is part of your build cost.
(Note: viral claims of six-figure monthly rental income from Mac clusters are unsubstantiated — we treat them as rumor and don't cite them.)
What a cluster buys you
- Memory ceiling per dollar: unified memory (16/24/32GB per unit) at consumer prices, versus 48GB+ costing $2,200–4,650 on the NVIDIA workstation side (see our buying guide).
- Silence and power: a rack of minis idles quietly and cheaply versus a 2–3 GPU tower drawing 700W+.
- MLX / oMLX ecosystem: Apple's stack has first-party inference tooling; independent benchmark sets for M-series chips exist (e.g. oMLX published M1 Max results for Qwen3.6-27B).
When a GPU box beats a Mac cluster
- Raw token rate on 7B–32B models: a single RTX 3090/4090 is still faster per dollar for dense models at the same memory class.
- Ecosystem: llama.cpp + CUDA remains the deepest path (quant formats, MoE support, community data).
- Context-heavy workloads on one machine: 48GB A6000 beats a 32GB Mac for single-node long context — the VRAM cliff explains why the memory ceiling matters more than raw speed.
Sizing rule of thumb
- Pick the model class (dense 7B → 16GB works; 32B → 32GB; 70B → 64GB+ or offload).
- Compute the token/s budget you actually need (interactive ≈ 15+ tok/s; batch/agent work can tolerate less).
- Compare: one 48GB GPU node vs. N×Macs — count total price, power draw, and what happens when one unit dies.
Our benchmarks board tracks Apple-silicon submissions alongside NVIDIA; filter by GPU name to compare.
