$1,500 Sweet-Spot Build (Budget: ~$1,700 at 2026-09-28 prices)
As of 2026-09-28 (weekly snapshot). One used RTX 3090 is the dividing line between "runs 14B" and "runs 32B interactively, 70B patient" — and in the September 2026 VRAM shortage it's still the cheapest 24GB 30-series card you can buy.
The list
| Part | Pick | Approx. price | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPU | Used RTX 3090 24GB | ~$1,300 (2026-09-28 snapshot) | The card has climbed all summer — check this week's snapshot |
| CPU | 6–8 core recent-gen | $100–150 | |
| RAM | 32–64GB | $100–150 | 64GB if you'll offload 70B |
| PSU | 850W–1000W 80+ | $100–130 | 350W card under load |
| Case | Good airflow | $60–90 | |
| Total | ~$1,700 | The GPU is now roughly three-quarters of the bill |
Why it's the sweet spot
- 32B Q4/Q5 interactive — the everyday model size for power users in 2026.
- 70B Q4 fits (~40GB weights don't fit 24GB — 70B needs the dual 3090 build or an A6000; what one 3090 nails is 32B + big context, and MoE models up to ~70B total params with small active layers).
- Resale floor: the 3090 has a deep used market, so this build loses value slower than new-flagship builds.
Honest caveats
- Used-market condition varies: check fan noise history and warranty status (there is none). Our used GPU guide covers what to test before paying.
- The card has climbed from ~$1,050 (May 2026 eBay sold) to ~$1,300 in the 2026-09-28 snapshot, which is why this build now lands nearer $1,700 than the $1,500 it is named for — the number in our weekly snapshot is the one to budget from.
- If you specifically need 70B-dense at speed, stop here and look at the $2,500 dual-3090 70B build or the A6000 48GB (used $2,200–2,800). For pure speed rather than capacity, the $5,800 RTX 5090 flagship is the other end of the spectrum.
